Are you guilty of placing, “references provided upon request,” on your resume? If you are, then you’re no different from all the other applicants. What makes you different is leaving that aged old statement off your resume. The real truth of the matter is the employer will always request references when necessary and you’ll readily provide those references, right?

Let’s talk about the real stand outs that gets your resume noticed. Let’s start with your heading. Take a look at a couple of suggestions.

Example 1: 25 Year Law Enforcement Executive with extensive international and domestic experience!

Example 2: 10 Year Human Resources Professional with an expansive portfolio covering 7 different business sectors.

Now, evaluate your resume and ensure your heading sings “Dixie,” like the ones above.

The employer is looking for someone that can hit the ground running. They are also looking for folks with a certain zeal to them - which starts with an effective resume. Your resume tells alot about YOU! Can you communicate effectively - are you a real go getter - will you fit into the environment - or can you come in as a visionary and revamp current antiquated processes to make the company more profitable? Your resume should tell them that in 20 seconds or less, because that’s the average amount of time it takes an employer to review your resume. If the resume fails to catch the eye, cycle 23 it is (TRASH CAN : )

Update, update, update! Always keep an updated resume on hand. Whether you’ve been with your company for 2 years or 20 years, you never know what the economy might dictate - if it’s layoff, you’ll be ready to pick up the pieces and forge ahead gracefully!

It is important when searching for a job to treat your job search as a “second job.” Plastering your information via the most popular niche sites can be very helpful when seeking a job change. Employer utilize sites such as www.monster.com, www.careerbuilder.com, www.hotjobs.com, www.shrm.org, www.indeed.com, and similar sites to fill open positions within their organizations on a daily basis.

Having a resume filled with keywords that populate when employers source candidates via target job searches is paramount to your success. This further emphasizes the importance of having a professional construct a career tool that clearly SALES you! Your expertise should be displayed in a way that showcases your skills and abilities over a 10 to 15 year period. The career tool should also help the employer understand your desire for next steps.

Career development has never been as important as it is today. Investing in your career is paramount to your families well being, your retirement, and ultimately, your own personal fullfilment. Having the satisfaction of no regrets as we seek retirement seems to be what most of us are working towards. And - if you’ve decided that transitioning to a new career called, “home” is the place for you, retiring with peace of mind is important.

Let’s begin establishing goals that allow us to balance work and family, enjoy life, engage in a new hobby, but more importantly, plan for retirement. What does that mean in the practical sense? It means- establishing goals that are obtainable - 1 year, 3 year, 5 year. Envision doing what you do in the next 3 to 5 years? Are you at a good place? Should you make changes now in order to reach the more obtainable goals or should you depend on happenstance to make it HAPPEN? The answer is easy - you are all you have. Your determination will dictate your success. It all starts with YOU!

Begin now making changes that will sustain you for years to come. Seek professionals for career development, resume preparation, job readiness - (www.resumeexecutivecoach.com) or (www.hooverwebdesign.com). Read, read, read every professional development book known to man. A couple of suggestions: “Good to Great,” by Jim Collins, “Leadership and the One Minute Manager,” by Ken Blanchard, and “Minority Rules,” by Ken Arroyo Roldan and Gary Stern are three of my favorites. Visit www.barnesandnoble.com for more fabulous leadership book options.

Check back for more leadership updates in the days to come. Read one of the above and let the web world know your thoughts!

Signing off…… your’s truly-
